Adult Lifelong Learning

E-mail Print PDF

In the Talmud it says: "These are the deeds which yield fruit in time to come: honoring parents; doing deeds of loving kindness; attending the house of study punctually, morning and evening; providing hospitality; visiting the sick; helping the needy bride; attending the dead; probing the meaning of prayer; making peace between one person and another and between husband and wife. And the study of Torah is the most central of all."

Study is the most central because it is fundamental to action as well as understanding. In the Jewish tradition, study is profound spiritual practice.

To paraphrase Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel: "When I pray, I talk to God; when I study Torah, God talks to me."

The challenge of being a Jew includes finding an appropriate way to continue to study, to stretch, to grow. Our Lifelong Learning Program offers a wide range of classes and experiences that include Adult B’nei Mitzvah, Interfaith Couples Workshops, learning Hebrew, Torah Study, exploring prayer, developing a personally meaningful Shabbat celebration. If we aren’t offering it and you want it and know a few others who share your interest – be it meditation, mysticism or Israeli dance – we will provide it.

Lifelong Learning is indeed a central Jewish practice, and here at Beth Chaim, it sure can be fun, stimulating and a source of joyful meaning in our lives.

Recent Adult Lifelong Learning Opportunites
Please contact our office for a complete description of each of the following classes:
~ "Listening to Voices from Israel and Palestine" We saw 3 powerful films that speak to the heart of the conflict in Israel and Palestine. These films bear witness to the struggle from both perspectives and allow us to better understand the challenges that lie ahead in making peace. We saw these films at the worship places of the 3 religions that are directly involved in the conflict. After watching each film (approx. 45 minutes) we will discuss what we viewed in a place of compassionate listening.
~ "Introduction to the Kabbalah" This course  provided participants with a basic conceptual framework for the Jewish mystical tradition. It will focused on the Tree of Life, the central paradigm of the Kabbalah and the relationship of the Hebrew alphabet to the structure of the Tree. We explored the Sefirot, the symbols beautifully depicted on the doors of the Ark in stained glass in the Beth Chaim sanctuary.
~ "Simple Jewish Practices That Can Change Your Life" Each day is filled with opportunities to connect with Jewish practice and time. In this class, we explored easy-to-do Jewish spiritual practices that can helped us find a deeper meaning in our lives as well as helped us cope with the challenges we face.
~ "Helping Our Children Survive High School" Three experts share their knowledge and respond to our questions. This 3-session class  included: How to Respond to Bullying and Anti-Semitism; How to Stay Involved and Honor Independence; and, Keeping Our Teens Safe in an Enviroment of Alcohol and Drugs.
~ "Deepening Intimacy for Couples" In the Torah, profound intimacy is articulated by the Hebrew verb, "to know." The willingness of two people to know and be known is at the heart of the yichud, a celebration of intimacy. Utilizing teachings, exercises and meditations drawn from the Jewish wedding ceremony, Jewish texts and many years of couples counseling and therapeutic work, this class was a journey for couples wishing to invigorate and deepen the intimacy between them.
